FAMILY

In each of the texts that we read for the course family and childrearing played important parts in everyday life.  Family not only provided support systems, but in earlier times were also integral for everyday survival.

No Adam in Eden: Grace Metalious.  This controversial novel portrays the lives of several families over several generations.  The story is mostly set in New Hampshire, where family issues include marriage, money, and fidelity.  Family is in a sense a unifying theme of this novel, as every controversy takes place within the families described.

Oral History at the Kitchen Table: Celeste DeRoche.  This piece explores various in-depth aspects of Franco-American culture within the working class.  Family is integral to this study, as the compiled memories of family members help to illustrate different components of life that may have been missed in other research of this kind.

My Mother's Walls: Lanette Landry Petrie.  The unity of family is illustrated in this study that focuses on the art occupying a mother's wall.  Petrie describes her mother as the matriarch that holds everyone together.  The walls are covered with pictures that portray important events in the life of this family.
