| Subj: Nerf Balls at the Orphanage
Date: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 8:34:56 PM Rhea and Dave sent down 80 Nerf balls for the kids at the orphanage. The day we received the box the boys wanted to open it right away but we needed to wait a little bit for everyone to be there.. So we took the opportunity to turn it into "Guess what's inside the box?" Since they couldn't read the customs packing slip cause it was in English we started getting all sorts of interesting guesses. One of the boys created a little hole in the corner of the box, enough so one could put their finger inside, but not really look at what was there. He cried out "They're sponges!" I said "No, they are not sponges." After this more kids felt inside the box and declare "They're sponges!" Again I said "No, they are not sponges!" More kids felt in the box and obviously did not believe me because they too declared that the box was full of sponges. I finally said "No, no, no, not sponges!" After which one of the kids who hadn't stuck his finger in at said in a voice almost inaudible, "balls". "Yes!" I said. I was relieved to be out of the whole sponge predicament. We then opened
the box and had everyone stand in line to receive a ball. Everyone has
to stand in line until everyone gets one, otherwise it is absolute chaos.
After we handed them all out the kids scatter and stared figuring out what
they could do with the nerf balls. Some played soccer, some tried juggling,
some used them to play basketball, others just to throw around in the air.
But there were a couple of kids who slipped off to go wash up...and guess
what. They came running back with the nerf balls full of soapy water declaring
"They're sponges!" Then all the kids wanted to go use their new sponges
to wash with. They then even used the nerf balls to wash the Orphanage
directors car. Apparently it had been Jana and I who was wrong all along
about what was in the box!
