Subj:  Happy Thanksgiving From Haiti
Date:  Sunday, November 30, 2003 7:49:04 AM

I will never complain again about having to prepare a Thanksgiving meal! We wanted to do something nice for the brothers, so we decided to go ahead and make at least part of the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.  At the beginning of the week we asked how many brothers were going to be present and we were told 10 max. No big deal...we can cook for ten people. But as the week went on more and more brothers started showing up for another project they are working on nearby. We were getting a little worried.  We recruited our neighbor, Madame Tenente, to help us with the turkey as we are not so practiced in butchering and cleaning our own animals. She went to Hinche and bought the turkey for us...$90 Haitian...about $11 US. The bird looked decent size enough to us, especially with all its feathers, but we obviously had never butchered before...the turkey was a whopping 7lbs when all was said and done, a Charlie Brown turkey if there ever was one! We were thinking how is a 7lb turkey going to feed 10 people? I told Brother Harry to start praying for the multiplication of the loaves! The story gets even better. Turkey is a very big deal here, a very special thing to eat, only the rich can afford. So when we finally arrived in the dining hall with the turkey we found out that the postulants and students who live on the brother's property, but who don't normally eat with us, had decided to show up too! In all we had 19 people and a 7 pound bird! At that point I said oh well and just started dishing out a little turkey to everyone. Harry's prayers must have worked, because in the end everyone was full and everyone got some turkey. I won't say they got stuffed on turkey, or that there was anything left on that bird, but what a wonderful experience to share with them. We even had a time of sharing at the end of the meal when we went around the table and everyone was able to say one thing that they were thankful for in the last year.

JanaAfraid1.jpg - Jana wasn't sure how close she wanted to get.
TheDeadlyBlow.jpg - Fortunately they are not able to identify the murderer.
Murderer.jpg - OK! I admit it...it was me!
PluckedFeathers.jpg - Takes more time than I thought.
CleaningWithBoilingWater.jpg - We washed it twice with boiling water after taking out the guts.
FinishedAtTheButcher.jpg - Madame Tenente was extremely gracious and helpful in the butchering process.
StuffingTheBird.jpg - Can't really put a whole lot of stuffing in a 7lb bird.
AtTheTable.jpg - Not quite all of us, but most.
StuffingJonel.jpg - Stuffing was a big hit with the brothers they had never had it before. Jonel especially loved it and kept randomly shouting stuffing all night...I think he thought it was a funny word.
Carcas.jpg - Like I said...nothing left.
